Abstract

Climate change is one of the defining challenges for humankind. Governments struggle to coordinate among themselves and to win today’s world inhabitants’ consent to, ultimately, sacrifice some of their wealth to the benefit of future generations. Private businesses are similarly faced with gigantic coordination problems and existential risks. What role can corporations be expected to play in tackling climate change? Should corporate law and corporate governance be tweaked to facilitate their transition to a net-zero economy? Luca Enriques will present findings from his current research: corporate net-zero commitments; the implications of “dirty” (high-emissions) assets disposals; the role universal owners in nudging companies to embrace the net-zero transition; the promise of voluntary carbon markets.
